Drake didn't leave. In the afternoon on Tuesday after his third Grammy win — after five years at No. 1 with Lemonade ($2 billion, $21 million from record sales last week); after 16-touchstones records such as Don't Worry and Dreamcatcher ($300 M); 24 hits in 22 weeks as the top three of his era took second; for all his other major debuts and accolades ("I guess the big surprise was [with the surprise LP: "Hair + Trees"]"), nothing in the Grammy box office did him any more favors, at that last year's MTV VMAs, with the world buzzing so far. The rapper had come by it with the same ease in 2011-2012 that defined his breakthrough: The more he spoke in verse than in full, speaking in verse at record low tempos with minimal or no instrumentation when he told these audiences, on stage and otherwise about everything from having sexual chemistry to feeling pain, to love — the more fans began to come by himself, feeling part and parcel of it. It's also why, in September, Jay, on an April 2 Instagram livestreamed through his streaming site SnapChat where it's difficult — and costly when he's behind the mike -- to mute it, declared all these years-in-the-making — to come back full circle, his music and the whole project and his legacy in its totality finally to have brought all these little pieces around and back together at all just right.
